The new bath time routine

Posted under family | no comments |

I posted this yesterday and somehow it didn’t come up on the blog, so I’ll try again today…

For a while now the girls have really gotten into taking a shower. Well, sort of. It starts as a bath. Water in the tub, we play a little, the girls get their hair wet, I wash the hair, soap their bodies they rinse the hair, I put conditioner on. Now comes the change. We put on the shower. And the girls scream and giggle and dance and play under the shower. And use all of their (very respectable) negotiation skills to stop me from turning off the water. Including the famous “ein mal noch” (one more time) or “two minutes” (in English, don’t ask me why). Eventually I win and they start fighting who is the first to get dried off, the first to get a pony tail, the first to be moisturized.

The one thing they don’t really fight over is who gets her hair dried first – they still aren’t really into that. But they tolerate it.

Then we brush teeth and go to their room where they put on their pajamas (“I do it” – including closing the buttons… patience is a virtue) and get ready for bed. The whole production takes over an hour. And is lots and lots of fun.

PS: seems like I didn’t jinx it too badly – S2 woke up once last night, confused about the numbers of binkies she should have… yes, they still sleep with binkies; we gave up on that fight for now… but overall they still slept very well.

Sleep, glorious sleep

Posted under family | 5 comments

I’ll admit, I’m really worried I’ll jinx it. Which is the main reason why I haven’t mentioned it in the blog so far. Not that I’m superstitious or anything. Just… careful, I guess.

But at some point I guess I’ll have to share the good news:

For more than a week now the girls have been sleeping very well, usually sleeping through the night without waking up!!!

There, I said it. And I hope this doesn’t bring on the night from hell for us…

We’re not sure what triggered the change (after what, 27+ months of waking up several times at night, not that anyone’s counting), but it coincided with them getting new comforters and comforter covers for their bed. When we went to IKEA on New Year’s day we got them very light twin sized comforters and pretty red covers with animals on them. And starting the following night the girls decided that they were over their jetlag and that they could sleep through the night.

Whatever may have triggered it in the end, I’ll take it. This is nice.

Some things are hard when you are three. Like dealing with disappointments. In the last six days the poor girls were twice told that they’d go swimming and once told that they’d go dancing, only to find out that this wasn’t happening after all (there was a third promise of swimming that actually succeeded last Sunday). The reasons were different (calendar mixup, surprisingly long holiday break, water pipe breakage), but the reasons don’t really matter. What matters is that they get upset and sad and you as a parent feel terrible about letting them down.

I am actually surprised how relatively easy I got off on Saturday – the other two times it was K2 who was with them and she reported many tears. I guess my trick was to take them straight to Starbucks and have some vanilla milk instead…

Let’s hope there won’t be any more disappointments in store for them this month – they really just want to swim and dance! And we just want them to be happy. Well, and safe, and healthy, and polite, and well educated, and… never mind.

Not much to tell

Posted under family | 3 comments

Nothing earth shattering happened. The girls came home from daycare. They played (some with me, some with each other). We had dinner. We played some more. They went to bed.

Oh, and I got another lens for my new camera and of course went off to take a couple hundred pictures. Here are two that I really like. No flash, so there’s some noise and the colors are rather pale. But look at those faces…
