Home Alone III – Day V

Posted under family | no comments |

Yeah, I know, the post is back-dated. But I wanted the dates to be right when I look back at this later…

So our last day without Mama started out great. The girls had slept ok and woke up happy and dry. We went downstairs and got our first Skype video call of the day (for the less technical of my readers, Skype is a way to have telephone conversations over the internet from one computer to another. And even better, you can do video calls where you see the person on the other side…). Anyway, my sister called and the girls got to see H1, Marcus, Nico and Ben! That was fun. The call was unexpected, though; we rather regularly call Oma, but hadn’t done this with H1 and family in something like a year. But of course the girls had spent Christmas with them, so they immediately recognized everyone and clearly loved it!

And a little later we did the same again with Oma and Manfred! Lots of German, lots of entertainment.

Since all this staring into a computer had gotten them a little restless we went out for a walk – the weather was just gorgeous. We went to Starbucks and then a playground where we ran into a friend of theirs from preschool with her parents. All in all we were out and about for about two and a half hours!

After all this walking and playing outside (and with some snuggling from Papa) the girls did take a nap. Finally. And then we went to their swimming class.

And then came the best part. When we came home Mama was back. Much happiness.

The summary? It was easier then the last couple of times. But it still isn’t easy. Every time I do this I have new appreciation for K2 and what it means to her that I travel so much.

Home Alone III – Day IV update

Posted under family | 5 comments | |

So we had a good day. After dancing we ran some errands, went to the library, played at a playground, had lunch, didn’t nap (oops), had a playdate with Charlie, went to another playground with him, had dinner, played some more and went to bed. Very tired. But not sleeping well. This time it’s S2 who keeps waking up, upset. H2 had again a tougher time falling asleep, but so far (they’ve been asleep for 2.5 hours) she hasn’t woken up again. Oh well, another tough night, I guess.

The description sounds a little dry. How about some pictures to help you visualize how much fun we had today? I took 460 pictures today (don’t say it) and luckily a couple turned out well…

Yes, S2 is indeed pushing H2 in the swing and this actually worked out well. And yes, I am thrilled to have another shot that shows that they are both gorgeous (not that I am biased or anything); the last few times I posted pictures somehow S2 had had more luck with drawing compliments from the crowd – so this time I’d just like to point you towards the picture of H2. Go ahead, click on it… there you go.

Home Alone III – Day IV

Well, I think I’ll call this success. S2 slept reasonably well. Some tossing, the occasional yelp, but all in all a good night.

H2, though, not so much. She was up every 45 to 60 minutes. Calling for me, first always asking for a binky, then just yelling “NO! I don’t want to!” (without telling me what she didn’t want – I assume she didn’t want to not have a binky, but that seems like a difficult construct for a three year old…)

I got her back to sleep every single time. Sometimes just by touching her and making comforting noises, sometimes I had to snuggle for a moment – and at 5:30am I simply stayed in there for another hour.

In the morning both were mostly proud to be such big girls… let’s see how tonight goes.

Other than that there’s not much to report. Right now they are at Princess Ballet and I’m in the waiting area, enjoying the free wireless. About 15 minutes ago the two teachers came out with all the little girls and went downstairs. I thought they were going to get a drink, but it turned out that all the girls in the class decided they wanted to go potty. OMG! The poor teachers. Something like 10 three year old girls, together in the bathroom. But of course once they were in there, I couldn’t really go in and help!

Apparently it all worked out, a couple of minutes ago they came back and everyone seemed happy. Still, maybe not the best idea the teachers ever gave in to…

Home Alone III – Day III

Today’s the day, tonight’s the night. The girls are sleeping without pacifiers.

They weren’t thrilled and it took more than an hour for both of them to be asleep (and lots of snuggling and love from Papa), but they’ve been quiet for an hour now. I worry what the rest of the night will bring, but hey, no pain, no gain.

The afternoon was great (which of course helped as they therefore were in a good mood at bedtime). First we went to Gail, our speech-pathologist. H2 and S2 just love Gail and consider the time spent there as “play”. And they are making really good progress. Their speech has improved so much. So that was great.

Then, right after we got home, one of their most favorite people in the world came to visit. Denise. You wanna know how much they love Denise? When doing the alphabet, ‘D’ is for ‘Denise’… So the girls were ecstatic and played and played and played. Then dinner and bed time.

Ask me tomorrow if I still think it was a good idea to do this while K2 is gone…
