Cultural differences

When you tell me “please pick the children up at 9pm” that to me means that I show up between 8:58pm and 9:01pm and pick up the children.

Apparently that was not what the nice people at the community center expected – and apparently the other non-German parents didn’t take it to mean the same thing as H2 and S2 were the last kids to be picked up… Ooops!

Other than that the evening was a full success. I have my flight simulator “gaming system” up and running. Three screens with a combined 5760×1200 resolution, a fresh install of Windows 7 on a high performance solid state disk in a system with a very fast Core i7 CPU and plenty of RAM – all running X-Plane smoothly with my new Radeon 5870 graphics card. And the girls had fun, too.

BTW: if the first part of the last paragraph didn’t make any sense to you, here’s the translation: Papa had fun.

Home Alone VI – Day 4

Posted under family | 1 comment | |

Very uneventful day. Why? Well, we woke up way too early (5:30am plus/minus 5 minutes for the two of them) – but that’s no longer news worthy, I guess. We had an uneventful morning / drop-off at school. I picked them up, we went grocery shopping (my big helpers each got candy from the nice young man at the check-out).

Back home we played for a little while and then I dropped them off at parents-night-out. Not the usual one at their school, but a different one at the local community center. The movie tonight is one of their favorites. Bolt.

I hope I don’t have to amend this post when I pick them up in three hours, but I think this day will be in fact mostly uneventful.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Home Alone VI – Day 3
(evening edition)

Another good day here… the early start not withstanding. Somehow we arrived early at preschool (wonder why). Happy kids, no problems. I once again went running after dropping them off but didn’t feel too good today – not sure what was wrong.

After I picked H2 and S2 up from school we went to Tae-Kwon-Do. We were a little early there as well, and Master Ju decided to give them a little private lesson before their Tiny Tigers class started. Fun to watch, I must say. Seeing a fifth Dan black belt demonstrate kicks (truly awe inspiring) and then get down on his hands and knees to help the girls imitate him – NICE.

In their regular class the girls successfully completed the first eight steps of the first form they need to learn for the “high white” belt – and therefore got a green tape on their green striped belt. Proud kids, proud Papa.

We came home, played for a while, had dinner, and then, as a special treat, our friends Judy and Bill came over with freshly home-made bread pudding with caramel sauce. YUM! The girls loved it – and so did I. What wonderful friends we have…

The girls are in bed and I’m wondering how early I can go to sleep as well… just in case tomorrow morning is a repeat of today.

Home Alone VI – Day 3
(early morning edition)

Posted under family | no comments |

Let me modify yesterday evening’s post. “So far, so YAWN!

S2 woke up at 5:11am. She closed the door to her room, but that woke me up, of course.

14 minutes later, H2 showed up on K2’s side of the bed. I told her to close her eyes and go back to sleep (which she tried), but that didn’t work.

Then at 5:35 S2 came to my bedroom. I sent her back to her room to sleep.

Let’s just say that none of us got any more sleep after that.

Oh well, they are eating breakfast right now and seem happy, so I guess I shouldn’t complain.
